What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are caused by malfunction and damage of valves in veins of the lower half of the body. As a result of damaged valves, blood flows forwards but also backwards, in the wrong direction (reflux). This reversal of flow leads to pooling of backed-up blood, which then causes veins to bulge, stretch and enlarge. This abnormal process is a medical condition called venous reflux or chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

What are Varicose Vein Risk Factors?

Genetics play a major role in development of varicose veins.
Hormonal changes and pregnancy are a big factor as to why women are more prone to get varicose veins than men.
Age: Vein and valve function may be deranged over time.
Weight can increase venous pressure in the legs and lower half of the body.
Standing or sitting for long periods.
Pregnant women may experience varicose veins in the vaginal, pelvic and buttocks area.

How are Varicose Veins Treated?

Advances in image-guided minimally invasive ablation technologies have led to the development of procedures such as RF Ablation treatment. There is no longer a need for the previous standard of vein stripping which was not only painful but required a prolonged recovery period.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for small varicose veins. Foam sclerotherapy is very safe as it quickly dilutes when it gets to the deeper venous circulation. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy can be used to treat deeper veins that are underneath the skin at various depths.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive outpatient treatment that treats superficial veins that are not functioning properly that could be causing pain in legs, swelling, discoloration, unhealing wounds by using radiofrequencies.

Microfoam Ablation

Microfoam Ablation is a minimally invasive outpatient treatment that treats superficial veins that are not functioning properly that could be causing pain in legs, swelling, discoloration, unhealing wounds by using a pharmaceutical foam.

I highly recommend. I received care for varicose veins in my left leg at the Sugar Land Clinic. I was attended by thoroughly professional staff from check-in forward. Procedures were performed by Dr Hamilton and PA Meghan Ong. Both are highly skilled, personable and time efficient.

Dr. Chauvin performed an arteriogram on my right leg yesterday and will be doing the same procedure on my other leg in a couple of weeks. I was extremely impressed with him and his staff. I was apprehensive about the procedure and processes until I met the doctor and staff! The service was professional, caring, and friendly. The process was not as frightful as my imagination had prepared me for! Was it painful? They used a topical numbing solution that helped. Do understand that the veins in my legs looked like an internal image of the venous system you might find on WebMD! So imagine how much work the doctor had in front of him! They have healed nicely and I have more to undertake but I look forward to completing the process soon. I must add that for 6 months I drove 4.5 hours each way to have this doctor treat my problem legs! That alone says a great deal about his talent and methods!

Dr Hansen is very knowledgeable and did a great job treating my varicose veins in my legs. We did a 1-year checkup and require a few minor touch ups. Overall positive experience and worth it.
