What is Claudication?
Claudication is a medical condition causing pain, cramping, or weakness, predominantly in the leg muscles during physical activity such as walking. Often referred to as intermittent claudication, this ailment primarily targets the blood vessels in the legs causing discomfort during activity. In severe cases of claudication, pain may persist even at rest, or worsen with laying flat in bed at night.
For those experiencing persistent vascular symptoms like claudication, scheduling a consultation with a vascular specialist at one of StrideCare’s 20 conveniently accessible locations across Texas has never been easier.

What Causes Claudication?
Claudication is primarily caused by insufficient blood flow to the muscles during physical activity, often due to atherosclerosis, a condition characterized by the narrowing and hardening of arteries in the legs. This results in the restriction of blood flow, and leads to reduced oxygen supply to the muscles. Patients who have claudication also experience sensations of pain and cramping during physical activities such as walking. Smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels cause peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
