About S. Michael Humphrey, MD
From receiving a medical school scholarship, to serving as a clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School, to performing over 25,000+ life-changing vein procedures, Dr. S Michael Humphrey’s accomplishments are many. As a highly trained interventional radiologist with three board certifications and over 27 years of experience, Dr. Humphrey specializes in the minimally invasive treatment of venous insufficiency disease. More specifically, he performs ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy and thermal ablation with state-of-the-art equipment and technology to restore blood flow and relieve painful symptoms in his patients. “With the current technology we don’t need to sedate patients. This enables us to talk to patients, guiding them through each step. I appreciate them and enjoy the human connection,” he says.
Dr. Humphrey believes it is critical for physicians to listen to patients at the vascular and vein clinics and give them the upmost respect. By listening, he learns much about each patient’s personal experience with venous insufficiency. Also critical to helping patients feel comfortable is explaining complicated medical conditions and procedures in terms that are understandable to all. Additionally, follow up after treatment is key to ensuring the proper results. “If the patient is happy, that’s the best result we can get,” he says.
After studying engineering at Texas A&M and then graduate school at UT Austin, he attended the University of Texas Medical School in Houston (now McGovern Medical School) on an MD/PhD scholarship. He completed his residency at Boston University, followed by a fellowship in cardiovascular and interventional radiology at Mass General Hospital in Boston. Before joining Precision Vascular, he spent 12 years working in hospitals in the Milwaukee area, serving as President and CEO of the radiology department and eight years with Vein Clinics of America in Illinois and Wisconsin, overseeing three clinics. Dr. Humphrey is board-certified in diagnostic radiology, vascular and interventional radiology, and venous and lymphatic medicine.
Helping patients at the vascular and vein clinics feel better drives Dr. Humphrey’s passion for treating vein disease. With technology continuing to become more advanced and faster, he finds great satisfaction in his ability to provide relief with procedures that can be completed in as little as 15 minutes with no pain and no recovery time. “It was drastically different 20 years ago, when hospitalization was required, and recovery could take six months. Now I have patients who go right back to work,” he says. Dr. Humphrey lives by the motto “Try to get a little bit better every day” and consistently looks to improve a patient’s experience, including finding new ways to decrease pain and make lives better.
Dr. Humphrey is currently accepting new patients and welcomes them to StrideCare’s location in South Dallas.
About StrideCare
StrideCare, the first independent vascular and interventional radiology clinic in North Texas, opened its doors in 2012. Since then, the practice has grown significantly and has expanded the specialty team to include vascular surgeons and vein specialists. The medically advanced team at StrideCare helps patients avoid the lengthy, intrusive procedures that were once required to address vascular disease. They use cutting edge, minimally invasive techniques that have smaller incisions, less discomfort, and faster recovery times to diagnose and treat patients. Individuals with venous insufficiency, varicose veins, spider veins, diabetic vascular disease, venous ulcers, peripheral artery disease, leg discoloration, lymphedema, restless legs syndrome, and other vascular disorders can benefit from these minimally invasive treatments.
The specialists at StrideCare are pioneers in cutting-edge methods for treating and preventing illnesses that lower quality of life. They create comprehensive artery and vein treatment plans that look beyond only cosmetic problems to detect underlying complications.
