What is Stenting?

Stenting is an advanced arterial treatment that involves using a small mesh tube to open up a closed-off blood vessel for the long-term. Patients typically undergo stenting in addition to procedures like angioplasty and atherectomy, as these two procedures respectively use a balloon system to open up the diseased artery and clear plaque buildup from the artery’s walls. Stenting is often recommended to patients who are getting angioplasty, as the use of this mesh tube will ensure oxygenated blood can easily flow through the body.

What Can I expect During my Stenting Treatment?

Your stenting procedure will be performed at your local StrideCare location by one of our board-certified vascular specialists. Before your stenting begins, your specialist will administer a local anesthetic to your treatment area. Once numb, a small incision will either be made in the arm or the groin. A small catheter will then be inserted into the body through this incision and led up to the affected artery. At this time, angioplasty and an atherectomy may take place. The stent will then be placed into the affected blood vessel and the catheter will carefully be removed.

What Can I expect After my Stenting Treatment?

Following your stenting procedure, you may notice swelling, bruising, and tenderness around your incision site. This is normal and side effects typically resolve on their own within a few days of treatment. Most patients report returning to their normal daily activities about seven to 10 days following their stenting. Patients are typically able to make a full recovery within about eight weeks of treatment. Your specialist will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions prior to your treatment, so you can better know what to expect during your recovery.
